Surf City draft report seeking public comments

WILMINGTON, N.C.- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, has published a draft of its General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Assessment (GRR/EA) for the Surf City Coastal Storm Risk Management project in Surf City, North Carolina.

The GRR/EA and related documents are available for public review and comment for a period of 30 days. The purpose of this report is to reevaluate coastal storm damages and effects from sea level rise for long-term community resilience over a 50-year period of analysis along Surf City. 

The draft report includes the tentatively selected plan consisting of periodic beach and dune nourishment along approximately 6 miles of shoreline in Surf City.  Initial construction is anticipated to require approximately 6 million cubic yards of sand placement. Planned future maintenance cycles are estimated to require approximately 1.2M cubic yards of sand renourishment every 6 years.

Comments must be received by October 4, 2024 for consideration.

A public information meeting will be jointly held on September 24th @ 6 PM at the Surf City Municipal Center (214 W. Florence Way, Hampstead NC 28433). The meeting will present report findings and Corps personnel will be available to answer questions and receive comments.

Once the review period closes on October 4, 2024, the Corps will respond to comments received, and incorporate comments and responses into a final report. The team’s goal is to complete the study process with signing of a Chief of Engineers Report in May 2025.
