WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wilmington District awarded a $13.6 million contract to Marinex Construction, Inc. for the renourishment of Wrightsville Beach.
This contract is 100% federally funded and will reduce risk to infrastructure by providing a level of protection against hurricanes and coastal storms.
Besides mitigating coastal erosion and protecting property through hurricane and storm damage reduction, beach nourishment projects can provide environmental, recreational, and aesthetic benefits. For example, nourishing and widening an eroding beach can:
• Protect threatened or endangered plants in the dune area
• Protect habitat behind dunes or next to beaches
• Create or restore habitat, lost through erosion, for sea turtles, shorebirds, and other beach organisms
• Create new nesting areas for endangered sea turtles and spawning grounds for other species
All beach work is to be completed during the established environmental window from 16 Nov – 31 March. The work consists of dredging, screening, and placing beach-quality sand on the beach for Coastal Storm Risk Management.
