Centennial Celebration set for Saturday at Lock & Dam #1

The Wilmington District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with the Cape Fear River Watch, will hold a Centennial Celebration at Lock and Dam No. 1 on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m.  Lock and Dam No. 1 is located at 996 Lock No. 1 Road, Riegelwood, N.C.

    Guest speakers at this event include Army Col. Kevin P. Landers, Sr., Wilmington District Commander and Cape Fear River Watch Education Coordinator Kay Lynn Plummer-Hernandez.

   The Presentation of Colors will be posted by the East Bladen High School JROTC.

   Media are invited to attend, and should contact Ann Johnson, Public Affairs Officer at (910) 251-4626 to facilitate parking access at Lock and Dam #1.  Media may also email attendance to ann.johnson@usace.army.mil .  

   Following the formal ceremony, festivities will include guided tours, games and food.  The public is invited to attend.

      Members of the Cape Fear River Watch education committee will host fun and educational activities for children and offer prizes for corn hole competitors. Two local vendors will sell food at the event.

   Lock and Dam No. 1 facilities include a concrete boat-launching ramp, fishing pier, elevated boardwalk, comfort station, water fountains, picnic tables, charcoal grills, a picnic shelter and canoe access steps for portage around the dam during off hours. These facilities are available free of charge and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
