A tractor-trailer overturned on Highway 64 when the driver reportedly lost control on the icy eastbound bridge over Jordan Lake on Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, 2015. The vehicle did not enter the lake, but came to rest at the water’s edge, according to Jordan Lake Park Ranger Francis Ferrell. No one was reported injured, but a fuel tank on the vehicle ruptured and 40 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the rip-rap and into Jordan Lake. An unknown amount of crank oil was spilled as well. North Chatham fire department personnel placed a 600-foot boom around the visible sheen to contain the spill. Environmental Management officials responded to the scene, and deployed a floating absorbent to mitigate any possible effects from the spill. Soil and rip-rap containing any contaminants will be removed from the causeway.
