Winter Camping Available at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir

Published Feb. 22, 2017

WILMINGTON, N.C. – W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir will open a section of A Loop of Bandit’s Roost Campground on March 1-30 for winter camping.  Camping will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, and sites cannot be reserved online. While water hookup will be unavailable on the campsites due to lack of pipe insulation, the campsites will have 30 and 50-amp electric hook-ups available. Restrooms, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station will be open for use at A Loop. The well house at A Loop will have a connection for campers to fill up their camping unit’s holding tank. The boat ramp inside the campground will also remain open for campers to launch their boats.

“Winter camping is a great time for those who want to enjoy camping when the crowds are smaller and temperatures are cooler as well as sitting around a campfire and viewing the stars,” said W. Kerr Scott Ranger Johnny Jones.

Ranger Jones said arriving campers will be required to register with the campground attendant or a Park Ranger. If the gatehouse is closed, campers must call the Visitor Assistance Center or the duty Park Ranger cell phone.  The phone numbers and camping procedures will be posted in a visible location near the entrance gate. Camping fees will be $20 a night. Discounts are available for campers with Golden Age, Golden Access, America the Beautiful Senior, and America the Beautiful Access passes. Payments must be made with cash or check.  No credit card payments will be accepted.
