This week, Angela Zephier joined emergency management professionals from across federal, state, Tribal and local agencies in Juneau, Alaska, for a multi-day Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) preparedness exercise. The training included emergency operations planning, functional sandbagging exercises and community outreach events designed to help residents prepare for flooding anticipated later this summer. The exercise strengthens coordination among partner agencies and helps ensure communities are ready to respond should flooding occur. Participating organizations included the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, National Weather Service, U.S. Forest Service, Tlingit & Haida Tribes, Alaska Department of Transportation, City and Borough of Juneau and the American Red Cross.
