Wilmington District has a long history in coastal engineering. Before the Civil War Robert E. Lee designed coastal structures at Fort Macon. The District built one of the first weir jetties at Masonboro Inlet. The Wrightsville Beach Nourishment Project was a pioneering project. Many original methods of littoral analysis and project evaluation were developed in the District. The District designed and maintains two deep draft and several shallow draft channels.
