Folly Beach feasibility study public information meeting

Published Nov. 23, 2020

WILMINGTON, N.C. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, will hold a Facebook live-stream public information meeting on December 1, 2020 at 6 p.m. to discuss the Folly Beach, SC Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Project Feasibility Study.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently released a draft Integrated General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Assessment for the City of Folly Beach and its barrier island. The study presents a proposed recommended plan for coastal storm risk management project with continued federal participation for a period of 50 years of cost-shared renourishment.

On behalf of Charleston District, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District is reevaluating what can be done to provide recommendations for long-term coastal storm risk management. The study is revaluating the existing 50-year project on Folly Beach, which suffered damages in recent major storm events. The study will determine if a new 50-year project is warranted to replace the current project, for which Federal participation ends in 2043. A new project, if approved and authorized, would supersede the existing project.

The Corps is seeking public comments regarding the recommendations contained in the draft report/environmental assessment. Once the review period closes on December 4, 2020, the Corps will respond to comments received, and incorporate comments and responses, into a final report. Comments can be submitted via email to folly-beach-study@usace.army.mil. The report can be viewed at www.sac.usace.army.mil.

The live-stream will be featured on the US Army Corps of Engineers Wilmington District Facebook page. Comments and questions will be monitored and can be submitted during the live-stream meeting. If you are unable to join the live-stream, the video will be stored on our Facebook page and can be viewed after the live-stream has ended.
